However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. Merle Richard Rose (1933- ) was born in 1933 in Fredonia, a borough in western Pennsylvania. As the youngest of three children, Rose's parents encouraged him to start his own businesses as a child. Local artist Stanley Gordon is known for his portraits of well-known figures, as well as Rochester personalities. A portrait of Jimmy Carter resides in Carter's library in Atlanta.
